2023 Trip to Ireland
Report by Dave Simpson
It all started when the MGOC said there would be no Ireland trip this
year. Well it was Richard’s good idea, “why don’t we do our own”, he
said and a good job he made of it, with the help of Scenic Car Tours.
The gallant six crews made their way to Stranraer on the Wednesday to
meet at our overnight stop for a very early ferry the next morning, so
it was evening meal and an early night in. Kate now knows there is more
than one 5 o’clock in a day. Arriving mid-morning in Belfast the group
split up, some going up north to visit the Giants Causeway and the
others who had been before making a beeline for Bundoran, just south of
Donegal for our Golf resort Hotel.
Unfortunately, the mountain tops the next morning were covered in low
cloud as everyone made their own arrangements for the day, some opting
for a brisk walk along the cliff top and others exploring the area. This
was much the pattern for the next couple of days with all meeting in the
evening in the bar to swap stories. Well, where else would you meet?
This resulted in everyone visiting the places of interest in the area,
so boat rides around Donegal Bay and routes around the local mountain
and coast roads were the order of the few days we were there.
Our time soon passed and Monday came too soon. Again we parted company
as some made for the return ferry and a couple of crews made for a visit
to Belfast to see the sights, while yours truly made for Galway Bay for
a few days. Well, might as well make a meal of it.
The week was voted a success with five TF’s and a B all behaving
impeccably with no-one having to get oily hands and a great group with
many laughs along the way; and a parting shot from Richard, ”why don’t
we do it again next year?” Can’t be bad.
Thanks to Dave for the report and to Richard and Jean Culmer for
organising the event.
