2023 Treasure Hunt

Sunday 25th June report by Stuart Bulmer

Well, the much talked about day finally arrived, with the sun shining 14 cars assembled in the Applegarth Car Park which was alive with lots of people and stalls as there was a food festival going on.

Upon our arrival we were met by Mike carrying a baseball cap around full of different coloured pieces of folded card with a number on, pick a ticket he said, so I duly obliged and pulled out No.14, oops he said, sorry but you’re going off at the back of the group that’s your start position. So, we all stood around chatting and some worrying what Mike and Jackie had in store for us, there were quite a few of the general public coming up and having a good look at the cars and a chat which was nice to see.

So, 10.30 arrived and it was time for Mike to get the first car away, Mike was setting everyone off at roughly 2 minute intervals so the first car away was Richard and Jean Culmer followed by everyone else in number order. We left Northallerton after first working out the anagram for our first destination which was Brompton on Swale and of course collecting clues along the way. After arriving in Brompton on Swale we had to park up and proceed to collect the answers to the clues that Mike and Jackie had set for us. From there you had to keep finding the route by working out various anagrams and cryptic clues whilst stopping off at the various points you had worked out to collect the answers to all the clues.

The route took us on some picturesque roads up through Reeth, Grinton, Preston under Scar, Redmire and then finally ending up at Castle Bolton, parked up in front of the castle for a well-deserved picnic; but before we could enjoy the picnic Mike had us …… Yes you guessed it, walking into the village to collect yet more answers to clues with the villagers very intrigued as to what we were doing!!

Thanks must go to Mike and Jackie for all the hard work they put in bringing this run together and making this day for all of us a great day out, and after all the worrying and trepidation of the day nearly not doing the run Jim and Carol!! You managed to finish 2nd winning yourselves a bottle of Whiskey to boot. Also, a special mention must go to Dave and Kate who after receiving numerous emails about the Treasure hunt and Picnic still managed to forget to put the deck chairs in!! at least he remembered the food!!

Final Result as follows: 1st Place Ian and Julie, 2nd Place Jim and Carol, 3rd Place Andy and Chris
