2023 John and Angela Gill’s Evening Run
12th July Report by John Gill

It was another pleasant evening as we met in what I call Norman Brown’s
carpark but I believe it is the old auction market site and that is its
official name. This was a first time the club has set off from here so I
was pleased everyone found it without any problems.
It is difficult to know where to go these days, we have done so many
runs over the years that when choosing a route, you always worry it’s
been done before! If, like us, you cannot do all the runs you have the
added worry that part of your run was done the run before! As it turned
out only part of the route was used for the treasure hunt.
The week before the run Richard Culmer got a phone call from a German
couple who were on holiday. They had looked up the YDCCC on the web page
and wanted to know if we were holding any events in the next few weeks
that they could join. Of course, they were welcome to come on the next
run which just happened to be my evening run. Richard gave them
instructions where to meet and got their meal choices, they found Norman
Brown’s car park no problem. I was worried that they would have
difficulty with the distances given being in miles, I know Jim and Carol
Turnbull cope with this every run but on your first and in a foreign
country. I need not have been concerned their MGA was a Californian car
they imported to Germany.
Jim Clark speaks German so I had him lined up to translate but I need
not have worried they both spoke perfect English!
We set off and headed for Langthorne, then straight on the Tunstall. The
idea of the run was to give the navigators a bit of a rest so they could
enjoy the views. There were not many instructions and long distances
between turns. After the run some navigators said they appreciated the
change!
We went via Catterick Garrison to Barden Moor, next was a loop round
Grinton, roads I had never been on before. We then headed for Wensley.
When we did the recce for the run there was a section of the road close
but apparently it was a rolling closure and should be open on the day of
the run! We had to go back the evening before and make sure it was open.
Thankfully it was, all would be well on the night.
From here it was a gentle run back to the Queens Head at Finghall. We
had 26 eating in the pub with another eight having a drink and a chat in
the bar. We were able to get to know our German friends Heike and
Mathias. I received a nice email from them a few days later which I have
included in the letters section. I looked up their home address on
Google maps and their drive home is 730 miles from Calais, that is a
long way in an MGA.
In my opinion it was a pleasant run with excellent food in the pub
thanks to the landlord Ian Vipond. I hope all who took part enjoyed it
too.
