2022 Tees Valley MGOC BBQ Run 12th June

Seven cars from YDCCC joined nine from Tees Valley on their annual run to Gennel House Farm near Flaxton, a few miles North-East of York. We met at Roots Farm Shop near East Rounton for a coffee etc and general socialising before setting off on the run at 11am.

The 50-mile route first took us across country to Helmsley via Potto, Carlton in Cleveland, Carlton Bank and Chop Gate. I love that road to chop Gate! From Helmsley we weaved our way on a circuitous but scenic route to Flaxton via Harome, Ness, Slingsby, Castle Howard, Granthorpe and Sheriff Hutton.

Two gazebos had been erected at the farm and they were very welcome as there was a strong blustery wind coming from the Northwest, keeping the temperature down. On occasions it felt as if the gazebos were about to take off. The weather was mainly overcast with heavy cloud but did brighten up a little as the afternoon wore on and most importantly there was no rain. The weather did not dampen spirits though; everyone had an enjoyable time, aided by two sessions from the Tees Valley ukulele duo plus bass player. Much foot tapping and singing along was observed!

The food was excellent, the BBQed sausages and burgers complemented with oven cooked chicken portions and an amazing array of salads. Fortunately, there were no desserts to follow; that would just have been sheer gluttony!

A hot topic of conversation was - did the speed camera get you? To elaborate - after turning right at the T junction in Chop Gate there was a mobile speed camera (on a tripod) set up about 200 yards along the road, on the right-hand side but pointing back towards the T junction. From the junction to the camera was downhill and a 30mph limit. Couldn't work out if the camera was aimed at vehicles heading towards Helmsley (i.e., us) or those going up through the village towards Clay Bank, hopefully the latter! At the time of writing this report no brown envelope has dropped through my letterbox, but it's early days!

The cabaret finished around 4pm and we then wended our separate ways home after a thoroughly enjoyable run and social get-together. A big thank you to Tees Valley for inviting us.
