2022 Soggy Golden Fish and Chip Run
Report by Mike Cowen
Another year gone and it ended like 2021 ended.
WET WET WET
Meeting at Scotch Corner services in just about dry conditions but the
clouds were threatening to deliver the rain that the forecasters had
promised. After last year’s great success with Halloween fancy dress for
our final run of the year why not try it again.
Vicars and tarts was the theme. The looks we got as we gathered first
inside the service’s then outside were not good.
With the rain stopped temporarily everyone gathered outside including
some tarts, vicars, and a couple of nuns plus well normal members.
With that amount of vicars, you would have thought our prayers would
have been answered and a glorious day would have been ours to enjoy the
wonderful autumn colours. Sadly not.
The run was the same as last year with a few tweaks mainly to try and
slow people down to allow Jackie and I to get ahead to a vantage point
so we could get some photos of the 17 cars who set out.
One of the tweaks was at the start. I laid two different starts which
kris-crossed on two occasions. Some never noticed but others were
adamant they were right and others were just confused. Seeing five cars
outside the Black Bull at Moulton discussing why they were all right,
and they were, was very…….
After that it was a lovely journey through the villages of North
Yorkshire before heading on to the moors passing through Commondale,
Castleton, Danby, Egton and Grosmont then ending up in Sleights for the
eagerly awaited Fish and Chips at Eskdale Fisheries.
There were places to stop for comfort breaks on route but those who
dressed for the occasion did not want to call in for a coffee for fear
of being arrested or for one nun and a tart arrested for using the wrong
toilet!!!
The autumn Colours were stunning if only the sun had shone. Despite the
start and constant rain throughout all made it.
After the meal our hosts decided which were the ones to receive the
fabulous prizes on offer with the Nun’s running off with the pairs prize
and a very tarty Jim capturing the individual prize.
Congratulations to all who made the effort and sorry if I confused
anyone at the start.
