2022 Richard Culmer’s Museum Visit
Report by Andy and Chris Redman
Sunday 2nd October dawned bright and sunny when 14 cars met in the car
park in Thirsk. Richard said he’d spent the week on his knees, so his
prayers had certainly been answered!
Armed with route sheets, we set off towards the Howardian Hills, with
various suggestions for coffee/comfort breaks, prior to everyone turning
up at the Air Museum in time for lunch.
After passing through such gems as Kilburn, Ampleforth and Yearsley,
most people seemed to have made for Castle Howard to enjoy their midway
break in glorious sunshine in the courtyard.
Refreshed, our route took us across the A64 and through Bossall,
Buttercrambe and Stamford Bridge, until we finally turned up at the
Museum.
Thanks to Richard’s careful planning, lunch was well-organised and
delivered – except for someone’s soup, we understand!
A visit to the Cinema or Chapel (!) acquainted us with what the airfield
is and was all about and then most people took up the opportunity to
park up in front of the Dakota for photos. An interesting experience for
those of us doing the driving at that stage – Kate was nearly sent
dizzy!
All sorted what a display
A superb day out. Thank you, Richard, for “something completely
different”.
