2022 Cobweb Run 3rd April

Report by Mike Cowen

Ahhhhhh

Has a cobweb run ever meant just that?

As a club we have probably carried on better than most over the last two tedious years. Despite that this run just felt like a new beginning.

Meet at 10am Denis Wheatley’s announcement said. By 9.45am Applegarth car park was filling up nicely and yes, the chatter and laughter was back. It was the sound of friends catching up.

Like all families we all want to know how each other has been and what has changed in our lives. Not in an intrusive way just because we are friends. Interestingly there was announcements of families that have grown and YDCCC was not left out. Over the last two years we have added a host of new members which is fantastic. Must be doing something right.

Whilst it’s good to meet new friends it was also good to find out what old friends have been up to. What have you done to your car? Have you changed cars? Normal feels so good.

Then Paul spotted what he thought was a scrape on Tony’s MGTF. On closer inspection it was unpolished polish. Not the secretary’s husband’s car unpolished. Tut tut. Insert photos.

Kevin Brown in his MGB coupe was there with his infectious smile. I asked how his car was. “ good I’ve been adding headlight grills” he said.

“How did that go “

“OK…. well, the first one did”

Please no one call him cyclops!!

Can I remind you of our hedonistic trip to Northumberland in October last year? What a trip but at that weekend Martin Bartle had an issue with his alarm and I kindly loaned him my 10mm spanner. Well at this run it came finally came back. Thanks Martin.

23 cars!! Let me say that again 23 cars turned up for the first official run of the year wow. Thank you to each and every one and I hope you enjoyed it as much as Jackie and I did.

It had everything from a drive back down the road we had just come up. Then out to Middleton Tyas. Onward to Gilling West via the A66. Down into the historic town of Richmond before heading up my favourite dale Swaledale.

Every time I drive through here great memories come flooding back. As we turned left in Grinton and climbed out of Swaledale heading towards Wensleydale we passed Grinton Youth hostel. A place I stayed when as an 18 year old we were on our way to completing the coast to coast walk. Happy days.

Over the top and I have to say the old girl relished it. No not Jackie. Midge! She handled the climb and twist and turns effortlessly. As we dropped down to Leyburn the sun continued to shine. Some stopped for a break and a chat.
The run continued to Masham and our destination The Black Sheep brewery. We have passed it so many times but never called in.

So, the first run of the year comes to an end. Let’s hope for many more as good as this. The club as a whole has been through the mangle recently. Now is the time we move on. Let’s put this saga behind us and rise above. We have a wonderful way of running a classic car club. Organise a run, turn up and drive. Simple.

Here’s to a great 2022

Footnote
Two days after, I went down with COVID. That started a domino effect. Sorry guys. What happened to that “new beginning “
