2021 Richard Culmer’s Evening Run - 7th July
Report by Sheila Mason and Richard Culmer
Twelve cars met at the Marage car park in Thirsk, at 6pm on a lovely
sunny evening, hoods down although the weather forecast had mentioned
light showers. The last time we had been able to organise an evening run
was June 2019, everyone looked happy and eager to leave with the very
clear, easy to follow directions, amazingly some members still managed
to get lost but Richard will tell you the full story of this.
The route was very scenic taking us 43 miles through many villages and
narrow lanes some with passing places and others without. The villages
included Cowesby but sadly we did not see any peacocks at the bridge
just before entering, Boltby, Old Byland, Coxwold meandering onto Bagby.
At the thirty one mile point we were only 100 metres from the highest
point of the Howardian Hills and just before the end of the journey we
were able to enjoy a panoramic view of the Vale of York.
The weather was very kind to us, just a slight shower, and with fingers
crossed we did not stop to put up the hood.
The final destination was a lovely pub called The Greyhound, Bagby, 21
stayed for the excellent meal, the chef is Turkish and the menu
certainly has a Turkish theme. The staff were excellent and we were all
served very efficiently.
I am sure everyone will agree we all enjoyed ourselves and a big thank
you to Richard and Jean for organising the event.
Sheila Mason.
Organisers note: Once all the cars had set off (and for once Tony wasn’t
first away!), Jean and I made our way to Scawton to get some photos of
the cars coming through. We counted ten through, led by Neil and
Heather. Hung around a while, but no sign of our esteemed Chairman, nor
guest Mark Taylor, who was in our old car. Gave up and headed home (we
live 50 yards from The Greyhound) so we could welcome drivers as they
arrived at the pub. Who should be sat outside in the sunshine enjoying a
drink but Dave, Kate and Mark.
Their story was that after turning left in Kirkby Knowle they missed the
next left turn, despite the instructions stating very clearly to slow
down as the turn wasn’t far and had no sign. Unforced error, or just
fancied getting to the pub early? You decide dear reader! In mitigation,
Mark was solo and following Dave.
