2021 Evening Run 8th September
Report by Angus Bell
Fifteen cars assembled at the Applegarth car park on what proved to be
the warmest day since the middle of July. As usual, MGs (11 in total)
were well represented together with a TVR, a clutch of MX-5s and a 2CV.
As this was our last evening run of the year, Stuart and Lucy were keen
for us to make the most of the available daylight. So, armed with their
instructions we departed at 6.15.
Our route ran casually northeast towards Appleton Wiske, west to Moulton
before heading through Whitwell, Great Langton Scruton, down to Newby
Wiske and across Thornton-le- Moor to finish at Thornton-le Beans.
Driving directly into the low evening sun challenged some peaked caps
and sun visors but traffic was very light with almost as many horse
riders and cyclists as motorists.
As usual, Stuart and Lucy's excellent planning and accurate directions
resulted in few if any navigational errors - or at least none that
anybody admitted. Over a welcome meal at The Crosby Village Inn, tales
from the trip were limited to one pothole-induced mechanical and an
encounter with what was described as the world's largest tractor and
cereal trailer on the metal bridge at Great Langton. At this point one
member claimed to have baled out, while another said this was the last
straw - all of which sounded a little corny to the reporter.
Many thanks to Stuart and Lucy for their second consecutive run and to
owners Chris and Moira at The Crosby for the opportunity to meet up with
real people in the real world in a real pub.
