21 Engineer Regiment Sapper 300 Open Day by Sheila Mason - 7th May 2016
Report by John Gill
Sapper 300 commemorates the tercentenary anniversary of the Warrant made
by King George I on 26th May 1716.The Warrant placed the
Engineers and the Artillery was placed on separate establishments and so
the Corps of Royal Engineers was born.
We joined the anniversary celebration at Claro Barracks in Ripon.
Our small group of 5 cars arrived at 10am and were shown to our
allocated place which overlooked the main area and in view of everyone
arriving at the event. We were represented by Bill's MGB GT, Kevin's MGB
Roadster, Dennis's Jaguar XK, Martin's MG Midget and Tony's Rover Mini.
The only other cars there were 2 from the Rolls Royce Club, 2 Bentley
Turbos. All the cars were very popular, with the crowd, and it was very
amusing, how many past owners, wanted to tell stories of their ownership
of a Mini.
The weather was fine, sunny but with a cold wind, some would say typical
of North Yorkshire in May.
There was plenty to see including Army Display Teams, Regimental Band
displays, Morris Dancing, Maypole Dancing and Birds of Prey
demonstrations. The highlights were The Parachute Display Team and The
White Motorcycle Display Team. The motorcycle team were amazing but
everyone held their breath when 2 cycles crashed, fortunately no one was
We all agreed we had a good day.
